  • Who is the new MacBook Pro for?

Apple's MacBook has long been the notebook of choice for professional users. But in the end, Microsoft's Surface challenged the top position. With the new MacBook Pro, Apple is now taking a stand.

Apple customers are basically a loyal people. Those who have once chosen products with the apple logo often remain loyal to the brand for years. However, there has been rumour among MacBook owners for some time. And competitor Microsoft is gaining ground with its surface computers.

Now Apple is back on the attack with the 16-inch MacBook Pro, which was unveiled in New York on Wednesday (local time) as reported by website Gadget Guide India. And it eliminates one of the biggest criticisms of the current MacBook lineup - keyboard reliability. Customers complained about mechanical problems.

Sometimes nothing happened when the letter key was pressed, sometimes letters appeared twice. Just a few grains of dust between the keys were sometimes enough to impair function. Although Apple was generally accommodating when repairing the affected devices, customers were still annoyed.

    Bye Butterfly-Keyboard, hello Magic Keyboard

After several attempts to improve it, the butterfly keyboard is now finished. The new MacBook Pro comes with a redesigned keyboard. The "Magic Keyboard" is based on the design of the iMac Pro keyboard. In the first short test it leaves a good impression with fast and fluent input. The key stroke is still very flat, but more pronounced than before. In addition, the keyboard should now be less susceptible to dust particles, which could lead to more failures on the butterfly keyboard.

Apple has also approached the important customer group of software developers with the keyboard's redesign. To the left of the TouchBar, a flat display with virtual keys, you now get a real ESC key again.

    Six speakers for unimagined sound

A huge difference to the previous model can be seen in the sound. Six loudspeakers provide a sound quality previously unknown in notebooks, with rich and wide stereo sound and a full bass. An ingenious system ensures that the individual loudspeakers neutralise vibrations between themselves. As a result, the case does not rattle.

Apple also raises the bar for sound input: three microphones record the sound in studio quality. Background noises are largely faded out. This is not only interesting for podcasters who want to record their shows on the go. The sound quality for video conferences also benefits.

Significantly more storage space in the new model

For use as a mobile multimedia studio, Apple has equipped the new MacBook Pro with advanced Intel microprocessors (6-core Core i7 and 8-core Core i9). And a powerful graphics chip from AMD (Radeon Pro 5000M with GDDR6 memory) sets the pace.

When editing video in applications such as Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere, you can now see the effects of filters or exposure corrections in real time. In the previous model, you didn't see them until after rendering the video. Paul Ripke, who has made a name for himself as a photographer for the German national soccer team, was enthusiastic about the new model after a first test right after the show in New York.

Video professionals like Ripke benefit from the new MacBook Pro not only with a larger display (16 inches instead of 15, 3072 by 1920 pixels), but also with new storage options: The device can hold up to 64 gigabytes (GB) of memory. At 512GB and 1 terabyte (TB), SSD storage in both standard configurations is twice the size of the previous 15-inch model. Up to 8 TB of SSD storage is new.

Maximum battery capacity, proud entry-level price

Apple even went to the limit of what is legally allowed for the battery with 100 watt hours (Wh) capacity. According to the rules of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), no more may be put into batteries so that they can still be transported in an aircraft. The predecessor model only offered 84 Wh. So the battery should keep the MacBook Pro running for an average of eleven hours, one hour longer than before.

Apple can afford the equipment of the noble MacBook well: The new Apple notebook is available in the entry-level version from just under 2700 euros. However, the price is exactly on the same level as the previous model. However, faster processors and additional memory cause the costs to rise significantly - up to around 7140 Euros for the maximum configuration. Apple is already starting sales this week.

For professionals and creative people only

MacBook Pros has always paid Apple well. That's also true of the 16-inch MacBook Pro. The company naturally places great emphasis on customer loyalty; whoever buys Apple once, buys Apple again. But also many professional applications such as Final Cut are only available for Macs and are perfectly matched to the hardware Apple uses. The MacBook Pro 16-inch is therefore aimed primarily at those who use the laptop for their work and use it to cut movies on the go. Or use it for other things that only run on a Mac. If you need a Mac and want to work on the go, you'll have to rely on the expensive hardware Apple provides.

Interestingly, Apple is pretty much alone with its MacBook Pro 16. We don't know of any other laptop that can be equipped with 8 TB SSD ex works. Even the new XPS 15 from Dell with the same processor and a similarly strong graphics card comes with a maximum of 2 TB SSD, but at 2999 USD it doesn't even cost half as much as the MacBook in the USA (6099 USD). However, the device is available in Germany with a maximum of 32 GB. So if you need - or think you need - the best of the best to work with, you have to go for the MacBook. Those who do not depend on macOS and are willing to upgrade the memory afterwards will find excellent and much cheaper alternatives in the Windows world
